Airbus A330 MRTT

Airbus Defence and Space has been selected by the French Ministry of Defence to supply 12 A330 MRTT new generation air-to-air refuelling aircraft for the French Air Force. The first delivery is foreseen for 2018, followed by the second in 2019, and then at a rate of one or two per year.

The contract agreed between the French procurement agency, la Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA), and Airbus Defence and Space is now ready for the official award. The contract covers the development and qualification of the specific French configuration as well as the associated support and training systems, such as spares, ground support equipment, training devices and five years of in-service support from first delivery.

France’s choice of the A330 MRTT makes it the sixth nation to order the type following Australia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom which have ordered a total of 34 aircraft. In addition, India and Qatar have selected the MRTT and are in the final stages of contractual negotiations for six and two aircraft respectively. A total of 22 aircraft are currently in service and the aircraft has been battle-proven in recent coalition actions.

The A330 MRTT has won every major tanker aircraft procurement competition outside the USA since it has entered the market.

Airbus Defence and Space Executive Vice President Military Aircraft, Domingo Ureña Raso said: “The French Air Force has enormous experience in the field of air-to-air refuelling. It knows the factors which are critical to success and its selection of the A330 MRTT is a real honour for us. In addition it is a long-standing operator of our transport aircraft and as always we are particularly proud in gaining the further confidence of an existing customer.”

In French service the A330 MRTT will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, be equipped with a combination of the Airbus Refuelling Boom System and underwing hose-and-drogue refuelling pods, and can be configured in a variety of layouts carrying up to 271 passengers as well as medevac arrangements including the French MORPHEE intensive care module carrying up to ten patients as well as 88 passengers.

LG-Door-in-Door-Refrigerator

LG Electronics once again demonstrated its leadership in home appliances by announcing sales of more than 10 million refrigerators with its patented Inverter Linear Compressor around the world since 2001. In 2001, LG introduced the world’s first refrigerator powered by an Inverter Linear Compressor, continuing to improve the technology ever since. In 2007, LG sold one million of its Inverter Linear Compressor-equipped refrigerators and increased that number to five million in 2011 and 10 million earlier this month. With strong results in premium refrigerator markets such as Korea, North America, Europe and the CIS region, LG is expected to sell more than two million Inverter Linear Compressor refrigerators in 2014.

Earlier this year, the Inverter Linear Compressor was tested by one of Europe’s largest and most respected scientific and technical bodies, the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE). LG’s technology employs a straight piston drive instead of a conventional reciprocating drive, resulting in less internal friction than conventional motors. This increases the refrigerator’s reliability and durability while also generating less noise while running. LG refrigerators featuring Inverter Linear Compressor technology proved to be approximately 32 percen more energy efficient than those equipped with conventional reciprocating compressors, contributing significantly to lower electricity bills. VDE also noted that LG’s refrigerator was up to 25 percent quieter compared to another refrigerator powered by a reciprocating compressor and reduced internal friction by 64.2 percent, causing less wear to the refrigerator and helping it to achieve a 20 year life-span, a first in the industry.

TDK SMG4A

TDK Corporation presents the new SMG4A series of serial ATA II compatible industrial NAND flash memory modules, which enable storage capacities of up to 128 GB and measure only approx. 30 x 50 mm. The product will be available from January 2015.

TDK can meet the requirement of industrial usage by offering a collateral error prevention function, which overcomes the fact that in case of power failure the conventional MLC NAND flash memory products lose the data, which is not written on the disk.
The new SMG4A series does not only feature the power failure tolerance algorithm of TDK’s own GBDriver RS4 controller IC, it also features TDK’s internal power supply protection circuit that reliably prevents any power failure related collateral errors.

Further advantages provided by TDK’s GBDriver RS4 include enhanced ECC and other functions significantly bolstering data reliability, such as read retry, auto recovery, data randomizer, and auto refresh. In addition, service life diagnosis software (TDK SMART) facilitates quantitative lifespan management.

Data security has also been enhanced. In addition to the standard ATA security complement and AES* 128-bit encryption, a TDK proprietary security function is also implemented. Data can be stored in the NAND type flash memory in encrypted form, to guard against the risk of data leaks and tampering, resulting in highly robust storage security.

The TDK SMG4A series of industrial mSATA form factor SSDs are SATA flash memory drives ideally suited for use as replacements for hard disk drives in industrial equipment and embedded devices. They combine high-speed performance, data reliability, storage lifespan, and data security on a high plane.

ASUS ESC4000 G2S Server

ASUS today announced that its ESC4000 G2S servers have powered their way to the top of the Green500 list of the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputers, as part of the L-CSC compute cluster constructed by the Darmstadt, Germany-based GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, in cooperation with the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS). The cluster will be used for theoretical physics simulations in the field of quantum chromodynamics.

Driven by 160 ASUS ESC4000 G2S supercomputer servers, 224 AMD FirePro S9150 dual-GPU modules, an array of 112 Intel Xeon E5-2690 v2 processors and 896 16GB 1.35v DDR3-1600 memory modules, the L-CSC cluster at GSI manages an performance-efficiency ratio of 5.27GFLOPs (5270MFLOPs) per watt — beating hundreds of other contenders to the pinnacle of the prestigious Green500 rankings.

Captor E-Scan Radar

As the system integrator, the contract will represent an order value of £365 million to BAE Systems. This will give Eurofighter Typhoon one of the most advanced radar systems in the world providing a wider field of regard than any other combat aircraft. Other benefits include increased detection and tracking ranges, advanced air-to-surface capability and enhanced electronic protection measures.

An upgraded BAE Systems Eurofighter Typhoon development aircraft has already undergone a series of modifications as part of ongoing Captor E-Scan development.  The aircraft flew for the first time with Captor E-Scan fitted in July this year and will continue both ground testing and flight trials.

These are the main components of the all-new Legend’s advanced hybrid system.SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD features three distinct driving modes, in which the hybrid system automatically controls the engine and three motors for optimal performance.     In combination, the newly developed V6 3.5 L direct injection i-VTEC engine and three electric motors deliver maximum output of 281 kW (382 PS) and acceleration performance superior to that of a standalone V8 gasoline engine. Honda’s own VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) allows the engine to idle three cylinders on one side of the “V” to save energy as needed, while the hybrid system also features highly efficient regenerative braking and deceleration. As a result, the hybrid system offers fuel economy equivalent to that of a standalone inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine.
  • Chassis
    In addition to SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD with its flexible distribution of drive power to the four wheels, the all-new Legend features Agile Handling Assist (AHA), which controls braking to enhance the vehicle’s handling performance. The rear center armrest features a control panel with a large color display, adding to the enjoyment and convenience of rear occupants.The windshield features a convenient head-up display that helps the driver maintain a consistent line of sight. In addition to displaying a digital speedometer, this display can show turn-by-turn driving directions from the navigation system and even allows monitoring of the Legend’s torque vectoring in real time.

Advanced driver-assistive Honda SENSING system

With the global safety slogan of “Safety for Everyone,” Honda envisions an accident-free society in which everyone can use the road in safety. To this end, Honda has developed safety technologies that cover every aspect of accidents: active safety technologies that can help prevent an accident, passive safety technologies that can help mitigate harm should an accident occur and pre-crash safety technologies that combine both the active and passive approaches.

Leveraging its technologies that sense the environment outside the vehicle, Honda has developed the advanced driver-assistive Honda SENSING system and included it on the all-new Legend. Designed to help the driver prevent or effectively respond to dangerous driving situations, Honda SENSING includes the world’s first Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Steering System, which is designed to help prevent collisions with pedestrians.

The Honda SENSING system receives information from two sources with different characteristics: a millimeter-wave radar system located inside the front grille and a monocular camera mounted inside the windshield. Offering enhanced performance, the millimeter-wave radar can sense the position and velocity of a wider range of targets, including pedestrians, which tend to be difficult to sense due to low radar reflectivity. The monocular camera is able to see up to 60 m in front of the vehicle, allowing the system to determine the size and other characteristics of pedestrians or objects and further enhancing the precision of the system as a whole.

In addition to these and other driver-assistive functions that sense in the forward direction, Honda SENSING includes functions that sense in the rearward and lateral directions to take safety support to the next level. Honda SENSING automatically and continuously senses the intentions of the driver and situation of the vehicle; uses visual, aural and tactile warnings to provide the driver with information and alert him or her of hazards; and provides accelerator, brake and steering inputs as needed to make the driving experience safer and more enjoyable.
