Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced that it has licensed its Around View Monitor and Moving Object Detection (MOD) technology, jointly developed with Clarion Co., Ltd., for use by Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. These two  innovative systems are the building blocks of autonomous driving technology that will operate commercially viable Nissan Autonomous Drive vehicles by 2020.

The Around View Monitor (AVM) is a parking support system that offers the driver a bird’s eye view of the vehicle’s surroundings in real time using four exterior cameras. MOD is a driving assistance technology that analyses the images from the AVM cameras to detect moving objects around the vehicle and warn the driver with visual and audio alerts. Since the market launch of AVM in 2007 and MOD in 2010, both firsts for any automaker, Nissan has steadily expanded its safety technology offerings, which have become a cornerstone of autonomous drive technology development.

The licensing agreement enables Hitachi Construction Machinery to provide AVM and MOD technology to its massive haul trucks and hydraulic excavators working at large open-pit mines. When drivers start operating the vehicle, drop cargo, back up to load cargo, or when a hydraulic shovel is used in close proximity to the vehicle, the AVM-MOD technology detects any movement or workers in the area around it in real time, enabling the driver to work with greater situational awareness which enhances safety.

Nissan will contribute to the growth of technology through the application of its unique technologies and know-how for its own use as well as in a variety of fields. Profit generated through the effective use of these intangible assets will be invested in new technology development, further contributing to Nissan’s technological competence. Autonomous Drive is being developed to help lower the element of human error during driving and contribute to a reduction in the number of accidents and injuries related to automobiles. The licensing of this technology is an example of Nissan’s intention to offer the AVM and MOD technology to other industries beyond the automotive sector. Through the wider application of its safety technologies Nissan aims to do its part in contributing to the development of society.

All-New Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, today unveiled its all-new Sonata Hybrid in Seoul, Korea. The all-new Sonata Hybrid features a unique hybrid design, advanced safety and convenience features, a spacious interior and trunk, and an upgraded powertrain that delivers class-leading fuel economy of 18.2 km/ℓ.

The launch event, held at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas hotel, was attended by around 250 media members and company executives including Jin Kwak, Hyundai Motor’s Executive Vice President, responsible for sales in the domestic market.

“The launch of our all-new Sonata Hybrid, with its class-leading fuel economy and powerful driving performance, comes at a time when eco-friendly vehicles are becoming established as a mainstream car,” Mr. Kwak said during his welcome speech today. “Our latest offering, based on one of our best-selling models, underscores our efforts to meet the growing popularity of eco-friendly vehicles around the world.”

The all-new Sonata Hybrid, the result of 27 months of development and an investment of approximately 180 billion Won (KRW), is scheduled to launch in major markets outside Korea, starting in the first half of 2015. Hyundai Motor targets to sell a total of 55,000 units (Korea: 18,000 / Overseas: 37,000) next year.

In line with Hyundai Motor Group’s target to become a global top 2 automaker in the eco-friendly car market by 2020, Hyundai Motor will expand its eco-friendly line-up in all segments by this time, all launched under the Blue Drive™ sub brand. As part of this initiative, the all-new Sonata Hybrid will be joined next year by a Plug-in Hybrid variant of the Sonata, which will be Hyundai Motor’s first Plug-in Hybrid. The company also plans to introduce its first dedicated Hybrid model in the second half next year.

With the addition of the Plug-in Hybrid version, Hyundai Motor will offer a complete range of eco-friendly models, further boosting the model’s popularity. While the all-new Sonata Hybrid will make its North American debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, detailed information of the Plug-in Hybrid version will be also released at the show in Detroit, U.S.

Upgraded Hybrid Power System

The all-new Sonata Hybrid is powered by an efficient Nu 2.0-liter GDI hybrid engine mated to a 38 kW electric motor. The gasoline engine delivers maximum power and torque of 156 ps and 19.3 kg.m, up 4 percent and 5.5 percent respectively, compared to the previous model. The 38 kW electric motor also delivers 8.6 percent improved maximum power, with maximum torque of 20.9 kg.m (205 Nm).

With the upgraded engine and electric motor, the new model achieves a significant improvement in fuel consumption: a class-leading combined rating of 18.2 km/ℓwith 16-inch wheels (17.7 km/ℓ with 17-inch wheels).

This engine transfers power to the road via Hyundai Motor’s innovative six-speed automatic transmission. The new unit – launched in October 2014 at the company’s annual International Powertrain Conference – houses almost all of the hybrid powertrain components within the transmission, minimizing energy losses and maximizing fuel economy.

The transmission is fitted with a highly-efficient traction motor, while the torque converter has been removed. A lighter torsion damper, and new engine clutch, which features fewer clutch discs, reduce drag and contribute to a more efficient transfer and use of power.

The most significant change to the new transmission to improve fuel efficiency is within the oil pump system. By removing the mechanical oil pump, which causes hydraulic losses, and replacing it with a new electric oil pump, the transmission automatically optimizes operation according to the driving conditions.

The all-new Sonata Hybrid continues to utilize a lithium-polymer battery pack – which in 2011 made Hyundai Motor first automaker in the world to incorporate such efficient battery technology into production cars – now with a 13.3 percent higher capacity of 1.62 kilowatt-hour (versus 1.43 kWh). The battery has been relocated under the floor of the trunk, allowing for a flat trunk floor, creating a more useable cargo area, 10.5% larger than that of the previous model, with 60/40 split-folding seats.

As implemented in the first Sonata Hybrid, the new model is based on a full parallel hybrid architecture. The advantages of a full parallel system allow Sonata Hybrid to generate electricity captured during low engine loads and regenerative braking system to power the electric motor. When the vehicle comes to a stop and the electrical load is low, the engine will shut down to eliminate idle fuel consumption and emissions.

Unique Hybrid Design

Compared to other mid-sized hybrid variants, the all-new Sonata Hybrid features a number of unique exterior design characteristics that distinguish it from non-hybrid Sonata models. As well as creating a unique design, these changes have a functional outcome, an exceptionally low drag coefficient of 0.24 Cd* for the all-new Sonata Hybrid, aiding fuel efficiency and stability (* Hyundai Motor’s own estimates).

At the front, the larger, more sharply-edged hexagonal grille has a unique inner-grille pattern. The hexagonal grille, a hallmark of Hyundai Motor design, aids cooling and aerodynamic efficiency, while the new, slimline LED daytime running lights and HID headlamps echo the high-technology image.

A distinctive chrome molding at the bottom of the doors helps to accentuate the Hybrid model’s sleek shape. At the rear, the revised, voluminous rear fenders flow into new, high-visibility LED rear lamp clusters. The design upgrades are completed with a unique, low-drag rear diffuser. New, streamlined 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels, together with a full underbody cover contribute to reduced airflow resistance.

Compared to the previous-generation Sonata Hybrid, the all-new Sonata Hybrid is longer (+35 mm) and wider (+30 mm), with a longer wheelbase (+10 mm), allowing more interior space for occupants. The belt line that runs the length of the car has been lowered, with a more sharply raked A-pillar to emphasize the generous proportions.

Like its base model, the all-new Sonata Hybrid benefits from improved interior ergonomics, resulting in a completely driver-focused cabin, intuitive interfaces and premium soft-touch materials to ensure a pleasurable journey.

Safety & Convenience Features

The all-new Sonata Hybrid also benefits from new, advanced safety systems including Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Parking Sensors, Blind Spot Detection and Lane Change Assist. In addition to the full suite of passive safety technologies, the car also incorporates a new knee bag to prevent injury in the event of a collision.

Access to the cabin is keyless thanks to a Smart Key, while the trunk can be entered ‘hands-free’ thanks to the Smart Trunk function. In addition, systems have been fitted to optimize driver comfort, including a powered and ventilated seat that has a four-way lumbar support, as well as Heated Steering Wheel and Smart Cruise Control for enhanced driving comfort on longer journeys.

Lexus-To-Unveil-New-High-Performance

Lexus has announced the addition of a second vehicle to its growing stable of F brand high performance models.

Earlier this year the luxury manufacturer unveiled the RC F, a V8-powered performance coupe that will launch in Australia in February 2015.

The newest Lexus F brand vehicle will make its global premiere at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The vehicle will be revealed at a press conference in the Lexus display space at Cobo Center on Tuesday, January 13 at 8:40am EST.

All-New-Legend-Flagship

Honda today announced it would begin sales of the all-new Legend flagship sedan at dealerships across Japan on January 22, 2015. The new hybrid system features revolutionary hybrid technology to deliver a combination of unprecedented driving pleasure, a refined and comfortable ride and outstanding environmental performance.

The fifth-generation Legend features SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD, which comprises three electric motors. Featuring a gasoline engine, a single front motor and twin rear motors, the hybrid system automatically combines front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with EV Drive, Hybrid Drive or Engine Drive to respond continuously to driver inputs and driving conditions and ensure optimally efficient performance.

The twin rear motors provide drive and deceleration power to the rear wheels in any ratio. This revolutionary torque vectoring technology delivers highly stable handling in every type of driving and refined driving comfort that exceeds expectations for the Legend’s class. At the same time, the Legend’s advanced hybrid system offers outstanding fuel economy of 16.8 km/L as measured in JC08 mode.

The all-new Legend also features the advanced driver-assistive system Honda SENSING, which can help the driver prevent or effectively respond to dangerous driving situations, thereby making the driving experience safer and more enjoyable.   • SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD
    Positioned at the front of the vehicle is a newly developed V6 3.5 L direct injection i-VTEC engine and a 7-speed DCT*6 with an integrated high-performance electric motor. Positioned at the rear of the vehicle is the TMU (Twin Motor Unit). Teaming up with a high-output lithium-ion battery, the control unit coordinates the operation of the engine and three motors. These are the main components of the all-new Legend’s advanced hybrid system.SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD features three distinct driving modes, in which the hybrid system automatically controls the engine and three motors for optimal performance. In EV Drive, the two rear electric motors power the vehicle. In Hybrid Drive, the gasoline engine powers the front wheels while the two rear motors power the rear wheels. In Engine Drive, the gasoline engine provides power to the front wheels. Responding continuously to driver inputs and driving conditions, the hybrid system automatically selects the most energy-efficient driving mode and the optimal choice of front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. In all three driving modes, the hybrid system uses all four wheels to efficiently regenerate electricity during deceleration, helping to delivery outstanding fuel economy of 16.8 km/L.Operating completely independent of the torque of the gasoline engine, each of the two motors located at the rear in the TMU (Twin Motor Unit) offers maximum output of 27 kW. Each rear motor is independently controlled and can supply either positive (drive) torque or negative (declaration) torque to its wheel.   • V6 3.5 L direct injection i-VTEC engine
    In combination, the newly developed V6 3.5 L direct injection i-VTEC engine and three electric motors deliver maximum output of 281 kW (382 PS) and acceleration performance superior to that of a standalone V8 gasoline engine. Honda’s own VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) allows the engine to idle three cylinders on one side of the “V” to save energy as needed, while the hybrid system also features highly efficient regenerative braking and deceleration. As a result, the hybrid system offers fuel economy equivalent to that of a standalone inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine.
  • Chassis
    In addition to SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD with its flexible distribution of drive power to the four wheels, the all-new Legend features Agile Handling Assist (AHA), which controls braking to enhance the vehicle’s handling performance. Also included is Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), which is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control in challenging situations by applying braking inputs as required. Coordinated control of these technologies helps the all-new Legend deliver outstanding handling stability and performance in a wide range of driving conditions, from urban intersections to winding suburban roads to high-speed freeways.Further supporting the all-new Legend’s outstanding performance are the new lower double-joint double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. Advanced driver-assistive Honda SENSING system

With the global safety slogan of “Safety for Everyone,” Honda envisions an accident-free society in which everyone can use the road in safety. To this end, Honda has developed safety technologies that cover every aspect of accidents: active safety technologies that can help prevent an accident, passive safety technologies that can help mitigate harm should an accident occur and pre-crash safety technologies that combine both the active and passive approaches.

Leveraging its technologies that sense the environment outside the vehicle, Honda has developed the advanced driver-assistive Honda SENSING system and included it on the all-new Legend. Designed to help the driver prevent or effectively respond to dangerous driving situations, Honda SENSING includes the world’s first Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Steering System, which is designed to help prevent collisions with pedestrians.

The Honda SENSING system receives information from two sources with different characteristics: a millimeter-wave radar system located inside the front grille and a monocular camera mounted inside the windshield. Offering enhanced performance, the millimeter-wave radar can sense the position and velocity of a wider range of targets, including pedestrians, which tend to be difficult to sense due to low radar reflectivity. The monocular camera is able to see up to 60 m in front of the vehicle, allowing the system to determine the size and other characteristics of pedestrians or objects and further enhancing the precision of the system as a whole.

In addition to these and other driver-assistive functions that sense in the forward direction, Honda SENSING includes functions that sense in the rearward and lateral directions to take safety support to the next level. Honda SENSING automatically and continuously senses the intentions of the driver and situation of the vehicle; uses visual, aural and tactile warnings to provide the driver with information and alert him or her of hazards; and provides accelerator, brake and steering inputs as needed to make the driving experience safer and more enjoyable.

Infiniti-Starts

Infiniti starts local production in China today in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, as the first Infiniti Q50L officially rolls off the assembly line. The long-wheelbase version of the Q50 premium sports sedan is Infiniti’s first localized model in China dedicated to Chinese consumers. The start of local production signifies an important milestone for Infiniti to become a mainstream player in the Chinese premium automotive market.

“Today we are here to witness Infiniti’s big step forward in China. We continue to expand our business in China and develop Infiniti as a truly global premium brand,” says Dr. Daniel Kirchert, president of Dongfeng Infiniti Motor Co., Ltd and managing director of Infiniti China. “Local production demonstrates Infiniti’s long-term commitment to the Chinese market. We will bring Infiniti’s renowned global quality standards and its premium experience even closer to Chinese consumers.”

With commencement of Infiniti local production at the Dongfeng Nissan Xiangyang Plant, China has become the third country for Infiniti’s global manufacturing footprint in addition to Japan and the U.S. It marks the next step in Infiniti’s global growth plan to expand the brand’s portfolio while establishing a broader global manufacturing footprint. It also underlines its determination to turn China into Infiniti’s second volume hub globally.

The Xiangyang plant is a manufacturing complex jointly established by Dongfeng Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. The plant boasts an annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles, 60,000 of which are dedicated for Infiniti production. The plant has many years of manufacturing experience and has undergone substantial upgrades to meet Infiniti’s local production requirements. The Xiangyang Plant applies Infiniti’s global manufacturing standards and received Infiniti manufacturing certification in March, 2014.

The Infiniti Q50L has a stretched overall length of 4852mm/191.0in and stretched wheelbase of 2898mm/114.1in, adding nicely to the rear passengers’ sense of premium comfort with the biggest legroom in this segment. The locally produced Infiniti Q50L is equipped with the same level of high-tech features as in the imported standard-wheelbase Q50, including some of Infiniti’s most innovative technologies, such as the world’s first steer-by-wire Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS). Powered by a 2.0 liter turbo-charged engine, Q50L strikes a perfect balance between power performance and fuel economy.

In addition to the Infiniti Q50L, Infiniti will also soon start producing the localized QX50 long wheelbase version at the Xiangyang Plant. Both vehicles are tailored for the Chinese market, expanding Infiniti’s product portfolio for the Chinese consumers.

China is one of Infiniti’s most important growth markets. Earlier in September, the joint venture Dongfeng Infiniti Motor Co., Ltd. was established with local partner Dongfeng Motor Corp. to jointly expand in China’s premium car market. The brand aims to raise sales in China to 100,000 vehicles by 2018, over half of which will be locally produced models. In the first three quarters of 2014, Infiniti has been the fastest growing premium auto brand in China as its sales increased by 91% year-on-year to nearly 20,800 vehicles.

Bosch-Makes-Motorcycling-Safer

Performance and handling are not the only outstanding features of new motorcycle models. “The trend toward more safety features also continues undiminished,” says Gerhard Steiger, president of the Bosch Chassis Systems Control division. Over the past six years, the share of bikes equipped with an ABS antilock braking system has risen 600 percent. “Now, every third motorcycle made in Europe has ABS on board,” Steiger says. At present, MSC motorcycle stability control offers bikers the best possible safety. At the end of 2013, Bosch was the first– and so far only –supplier to start production of this safety system. “Like ESP in cars, MSC offers the best possible support for every situation, whether braking or accelerating, and even when the rider is leaning over at a steep angle,” Steiger says.

Clear evidence of the benefit of these safety systems is provided by GIDAS, the German In-Depth Accident Study. ABS can already prevent one-quarter of all motorcycle accidents involving casualties. Further GIDAS analyses show that MSC can help in two-thirds of the motorcycle accidents that occur in bends due to rider error.

Following its multiple award-winning 1190 Adventure and Adventure R, the Austrian manufacturer KTM is now offering this system in its recently debuted 1290 Super Adventure. For the first time, it will also be available with innovative optional features: hill hold control and a lean angle-dependent drag torque control.

Bosch MSC offers a new dimension of safety
MSC motorcycle stability control currently offers the best possible safety for motorcyclists. Technically, the system is based on a Bosch ABS, plus an electronic composite brake function. All the rider has to do is apply the front or back brake. The system automatically applies the second brake, ensuring that the best possible braking force is applied to each wheel. An additional lean-angle sensor measures the actual lean of the motorcycle, allowing the system to instantaneously adjust its electronic braking and acceleration interventions to suit the current riding status. In this way, it provides the best possible support in bends. Given that nearly every second fatal motorcycle accident happens in a bend, this is especially important. Precise regulation offers a smooth progression in brake pressure as the rider leans in for the corner, as well as boosting deceleration on the straight. And by analyzing tilt rate and linear acceleration, the system can tell sooner when the front or rear wheel is about to lift off, allowing MSC to intervene with a corrective action. Brake force is distributed flexibly and fast between the front and rear wheel according to the driving situation, ensuring the safest and best possible deceleration.

MSC and more in the new KTM 1290 Super Adventure
A number of additional functions make the 1290 Super Adventure stand out from its predecessor, the 1190 Adventure. As a new standard feature, the composite function in the MSC adjusts the distribution of brake force between front and rear wheel to the linear gradient of the road. When riding uphill, for example, the rear wheel is braked more than on a level stretch, since it can transfer more braking force in such a situation. A hill hold control and drag torque control are also available as options. Hill hold control automatically maintains brake pressure, even when the rider releases the hand and foot brakes. The brake is not opened until the rider has opened the throttle and engaged the clutch. There is no longer any juggling of clutch, brakes, and throttle, which is especially tricky during hill starts. For its part, the drag torque control counteracts the critical situations that arise when drive torque suddenly increases or drops. In such cases, the driven wheel can lose traction and start to skid. This can happen when engine braking torque is too high – when changing to a lower gear too soon, for example – or when the rider suddenly lets go of the throttle on a slippery road surface. MSC detects the lean angle and the risk of traction loss, and instantly computes the best possible values for acceleration and braking. This provides a considerable boost to safety in such situations.

From ABS light to MSC – a solution for every class of motorcycle
Having taken a modular approach, Bosch can offer an ABS to suit any type of motorized two-wheeler that features a hydraulic brake system. The portfolio ranges from a single hydraulic brake channel to control the front wheel, to a dual-channel system, to the top-of-the-line ABS 9 enhanced, featuring an eCBS (electronic combined brake system) function. In the latter case, all the rider has to do is apply one of the brakes, front or rear. ABS 9 enhanced then automatically activates the second brake to bring the optimum brake force to bear on both wheels.

HR-V-Prototype

Honda has revealed the first images of the new European version of a small SUV, ahead of its world premiere at the 2014 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris next month. The HR-V is Honda’s new entry into Europe’s fast-growing small SUV segment.

The unique exterior design of the new HR-V prototype echoes that of a coupé, with sharp, dynamic lines that link the sleek upper body with the stable and planted lower body. This coupé-esque elegance is achieved without compromising the interior practicality of the car.

The HR-V features a centre fuel tank location to create one of the most spacious and adaptable small SUV cabins. Honda Magic Seats® make use of this versatility by enabling a wide range of seating configurations, with the ability to fold the second row seats completely flat for added cargo space.

Mercedes-AMG-GT

As exciting as crossing the finish line in a car race – that was how Mercedes-AMG presented its new GT V8 sports car this evening, the second vehicle to be entirely developed under its own direction. None other than current Formula 1 points leader Nico Rosberg piloted the breath-taking newcomer from the sports car brand of Mercedes-Benz onto the stage.

The emotions ran high for around 400 international guests from the worlds of politics, business and the media, including AMG’s founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, as the Mercedes-AMG GT made its début in its birthplace. Previously, Bernd Schneider, five-time DTM champion and with 43 victories the most successful DTM driver of all time, presented a parade of the most famous vehicles from AMG’s history.

Mercedes-AMG created an authentic motor sports atmosphere at its head office in Affalterbach for the first appearance of the new GT under the eyes of the world. A temporary pit lane with stands for spectators and a victory fireworks show set the perfect scene for the début of an ambitious new challenger.

With the new Mercedes-AMG GT, the Mercedes-AMG sports car brand enters a new segment for the company that is teeming with top-class competitors. Its front mid-engine concept with transaxle and the intelligent aluminium lightweight construction form the basis for a highly dynamic driving experience. The basis for AMG’s hallmark driving performance is provided by the AMG 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo engine, which is also a new development and is built in two output specifications: as a GT with 340 kW (462 hp) and as a GT S with 375 kW (510 hp).

Lexus will launch its all new, highly specified NX 300h with innovative features like all-speed active cruise control, wireless phone charger*, reverse camera, satellite navigation**, DAB+ digital radio^, access to the Lexus Enform# suite of connected services and Lexus Hybrid Drive.

Priced between its smaller (VFACTS SUV>$40K) and larger (VFACTS SUV>$60K) SUV rivals, the highly specified Lexus NX Line carries a value and specification advantage of up to 14 per cent.

The biennial GPEC fair (General Police Equipment Exhibition & Conference) is Europe’s biggest industry-only special trade fair showcasing police equipment and security technology. As an important industry and technology fair, this eighth GPEC event will provide an international communication platform for trade visitors from police and other public safety services. The last event, GPEC 2012, attracted more than 6,500 visitors from 59 countries and almost 500 national and international exhibitors from 29 countries and five continents.

This year, BMW is once again presenting a diverse range of practical and purpose-designed emergency and security vehicles that meet the highest standards not only of performance, functionality and safety but also of efficiency and fuel economy. At GPEC, BMW will be showing seven emergency and security vehicles and motorcycles, including the new BMW X5 Security Plus (VR 6 – BRV 2009), as well as the latest, extensively revised BMW X3 xDrive. A helicopter stretcher in the BMW X5 Security (VR 4 – BRV 2009) will be shown for the first time. This BMW X5 Security model is suitable for a wide range of applications, and provides valuable assistance particularly in incidents where protectees require medical attention. Completing the range of car exhibits is a BMW 530d Sedan in an unmarked video pursuit vehicle version. The public authority versions of the BMW R 1200 RT and BMW F 800 GT motorcycle models will also be on show.
