F-35B Aircraft BF-1 and BF-4

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program continued a steady path of flight test milestones in August, including weapons separation, software compatibility and flight hours, all demonstrating program maturity.

“The test milestones are a direct result of the detailed planning, coordination and execution between various government teams and the integrated test force,” said J.D. McFarlan, Lockheed Martin’s Vice President for F-35 Test & Verification. “Every testing milestone demonstrates the development of the F-35 in successive steps toward enabling the U.S. Marine Corps to attain its F-35B Initial Operational Capacity (IOC) next year.”

F-35A aircraft AF-1 accomplished its 400th flight during a successful GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) aircraft separation test on Aug. 13 at Edwards Air Force Base, California.  This was the first GBU-31 Mark-84 (2,000-pound guided munition) separation demonstration from the F-35.  Previous GBU-31 separations were with the BLU-109 (Bomb Live Unit) bomb body.

F-35B aircraft BF-1 and BF-4 completed “Mode 4” formation testing on Aug 9th, as required for Block 2B software capability. “In Mode 4 operations, the STOVL Propulsion System is engaged, the lift fan, roll post nozzle, and three-bearing-swivel nozzle are operating, and all propulsion system doors and inlets are open.  Flight testing validated the F-35B Short Take Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) variant’s ability to operate well in this configuration during formation flight which supports operations around the ship; a key milestone for the F-35B path to IOC,” McFarlan said.

F-35B aircraft BF-3 completed the 2B software fleet release weapon separation requirements for the F-35B with two successful AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) Air Vehicle Instrumented (AAVI) separation flights on consecutive days, Aug. 14 and 15.  The AIM-120 radar-guided missiles were launched over the Atlantic Test Range. “2B software fleet release is critical to the warfighter because it delivers the first combat capability to our most dominant 5th generation platform. Weapons employment is one the most critical combat capabilities.  This culminates years of dedicated work that proves safe separation in 2B configurations and provides this capability and confidence to our customers,” McFarlan said.

Along with the testing milestones, to date, the overall System Development and Demonstration (SDD) F-35A test fleet surpassed its 4,000th flight hour on Aug. 14 and in total, the F-35 Fleet has surpassed 19,500 flight hours, with more than 8,000 hours in SDD aircraft. F-35A aircraft AF-1 achieved its 400th flight milestone on Aug. 13; F-35A aircraft AF-4 surpassed 500 flight hours, Aug. 11 and F-35C aircraft CF-2 achieved 300 flights on Aug. 14.

The F-35 Lightning II, a 5th generation fighter, combines advanced low observable stealth technology with fighter speed and agility, fully fused sensor information, network-enabled operations and advanced sustainment. Three distinct variants of the F-35 will replace the A/OA-10 Thunderbolt II and F-16 Fighting Falcon for the U.S. Air Force, the F/A-18 Hornet for the U.S. Navy, the F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier for the U.S. Marine Corps, and a variety of fighters for at least 10 other countries. Following the U.S. Marine Corps’ planned 2015 IOC, the U.S. Air Force and Navy intend to attain IOC in 2016 and 2018, respectively.

1) Touch panel and downward-opening monitor
As the result of a quest for the optimal monitor for taking selfies, the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL7 uses a large, high definition touch panel with a downward-opening monitor that rotates 180o downward. This brings the monitor closer compared to when opened upward and alleviates the need to worry about the lens’ position, allowing for comfortable photography. The monitor is bigger and easier to view with 3:2 aspect ratio and 3.0-inch, 1.04 million dot screen. Moreover, the monitor is easily checked and operated even when the bundled flash is attached, so users can take beautiful touch selfies in any setting or situation.

2) Selfie mode
The “Selfie mode” activates when the monitor is tilted downward, and the image shown on the monitor automatically turns into a mirror display. When an electronic zoom lens is attached, the zoom automatically moves to the wide-angle end*5 so that the users can quickly start taking selfies with the optimal angle of view. e-Portrait button*6 , shutter release button, and custom self timer switching buttons are displayed on the monitor, making it possible to switch among options with a single touch to take a variety of beautiful selfies. High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM)

Raytheon Company and the U.S. Air Force successfully flight tested an upgraded High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM). The HARM Control Section Modification (HCSM) is more precise and accurate, which reduces potential collateral damage.

During this test mission, an F-16 aircraft fired an HCSM, AGM-88F, against an emitter located outside of a zone of exclusion, which contained a similar radiating emitter. The HCSM used its new global positioning system (GPS)/inertial measurement unit (IMU) capability and successfully impacted the correct target. Another HCSM test mission is needed to determine if HCSM is ready for deployment to the U.S. Air Force.

“Raytheon’s HCSM offers the warfighter enhanced capabilities at an affordable price, providing best value for suppression of enemy air defense weapon options,” said Mike Jarrett, vice president of Raytheon Air Warfare Systems.

The Air Force awarded Raytheon the HCSM contract in 2012. The missile was recently cleared for full rate production.

The AGM-88 High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile is a key battlefield element to suppress or destroy surface-to-air missile radars, early warning radars, and radar-directed air defense artillery systems. Automobili Lamborghini presents its new generation racecar developed by its Motorsport department: the new Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo. Unveiled in a world preview a few days ago during the prestigious Monterey Car Week (California, USA), the car will debut in all three series (Europe, Asia and North America) of the 2015 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo.

The Huracán Super Trofeo marks a new benchmark for the race series. According to Maurizio Reggiani, in charge of Lamborghini’s Research and Development Department and motorsport activities, “The Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo is an all-new car built from scratch with a clear racing concept. Every feature is engineered for sophisticated high performance, complying with the strictest motorsport safety standards.”

The chassis features an exceptionally light roll cage at just 43 Kg that extends to the rear axle, and impressive torsional stiffness that represents a massive 45% improvement compared to the previous model. The frame is a hybrid carbon/aluminum construction with modified geometries to house an improved radiator up front and better accommodate the racing gearbox at the rear, which also provides better aerodynamics. The dry weight of the Huracán Super Trofeo is 1,270 Kg, with a weight distribution of 42/58%.

The bodywork is in composite materials and, along with the aerodynamics, has been developed in collaboration with Dallara Engineering with the direct involvement of the founder Gian Paolo Dallara. Refinements to the Huracán Super Trofeo include new bodywork ‘fast fittings’, and a new oil radiator providing even more performance than that found on the Gallardo. The new Huracán Super Trofeo adopts the V10 direct injection engine mounted on the road car, managed by a Motec control unit that delivers a maximum output of 620 hp and an astonishing weight/power ratio of 2.05 Kg/hp.

A significant feature of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo is the rear-wheel drive choice as already adopted in the GT classes. This will allow Super Trofeo drivers to gain important experience of this traction system to facilitate their motorsport careers. Further technical features on the Huracán Super Trofeo include new engine supports, a new three-disc clutch and an XTrac sequential gearbox developed  specifically for the  Huracán Super Trofeo with an electric actuator designed by the Magneti Marelli Motorsport division.

Electronics represent a significant leap forward in development, and now include new lightweight cables and connections specifically for racing. The control unit is the MOTEC M182 that controls data, gear changes and the new TFT display mounted on the dashboard. Special features are the traction control and the Bosch Motorsport ABS. This system features 12 different settings that can be actioned directly on the steering wheel for ideal set-up in any weather/track conditions. Front and rear lights are now LED only as on the road going version. A new, race-oriented steering wheel has been developed jointly with OMP.

Aerodynamics have been refined for better drag efficiency and maximum traction and downforce in any track conditions. More balanced than before, the aerodynamics now benefit from a rear wing with ten different settings, front and rear diffusers, and adjustable front air intake ducts.

The new Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo will be exclusively equipped with Pirelli tyres. Pirelli has followed every phase of the new car’s development – from the first drawings to final road tests – in order to create tyres that are perfectly matched to the Lamborghini’s specific characteristics. In particular, the decision to go with two-wheel drive for the new Huracan Super Trofeo has led to new tyre sizes: 305/660-18 at the front, and 315/680-18 at the back.

The Huracán Super Trofeo is mounted with fully adjustable anti-roll bars and two-way adjustable Ohlins dampers. The hydraulic power steering enhances steering sensitivity and adopts an electric power pump. In the racing-specific interiors the Alcantara® in Nero Ade colour is used throughout the car, on the dashboard and central tunnel and also on fundamental driving parts, such as the steering wheel, gear selector and ergonomic seats.

Lamborghini’s newest raging bull supercar already made its track debut last month in development tests. For the occasion, under the supervision of the Chief Test Driver Giorgio Sanna and along with the two official Automobili Lamborghini test drivers Fabio Babini and Adrian Zaugg, all the Young Drivers Program pilots were involved and provided their feedback.  With the new Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo the historic partnership between the brand founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini back in 1963 and Gian Paolo Dallara, now becomes even closer. The same Dallara was among the first engineers who worked on Lamborghini cars and had a key role in the development of the legendary Miura.

“For Dallara Engineering, it has been very rewarding to be involved in the aerodynamic and body development of a high performance car such as the Huracán Super Trofeo. From my personal point of view it has been for me a kind of ‘homecoming’,” said Giampaolo Dallara. “50 years ago, Lamborghini gave me the opportunity to challenge myself in ambitious and successful projects, and this new collaboration allows me to feel part of a company in which I have experienced moments of intense personal and professional achievement.”

The newest configuration of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the F-16V, has reached a major capability milestone with the integration of a new Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar.

“Completing this milestone on schedule demonstrates our ability to meet program commitments,” said Roderick McLean, vice president and general manager of the F-16/F-22 Integrated Fighter Group at Lockheed Martin. “It proves once again why customers turn to Lockheed Martin to upgrade their F-16 fleets and advance the mission capability of the world’s most effective 4th generation multi-role fighter.”

The completion of this AESA radar Critical Design Review ensures Northrop Grumman’s Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) design meets all specified U.S. Air Force and Lockheed Martin requirements. Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] will continue with follow-on activities such as development integration and ground and flight test for Taiwan’s fleet of 144 Block 20 F-16A/B fighter jets. With the upgrade to the new SABR and enhancements to the mission computer, vehicle systems, aircraft structure, cockpit and electronic warfare system, Taiwan moves forward as the launch customer for the new F-16V configuration.

More than 4,550 F-16 aircraft have been delivered to date, and production is expected to continue through 2017, with major upgrades being incorporated for all F-16 versions.
